After more than ten years in hiding, rotary lovers may be surprised to hear that the Mazda RX- 7 may make a comeback in 2012. Developers are unsure as to whether it will carry it's predecessors RX-7 badge or go with a new RX-9 badge. It may be a hybrid, but may also be the quickest, lightest and fastest RX-7 ever produced. It is rumored to have it's debut in late 2011, or early 2012.
In 1977 we saw the introduction of the original RX-7, which took the world by storm as an affordable two seater coupe, that was quick and light with a unique rotary engine.
In the hopes of increasing fallen sales, Mazda in 1986 redesigned the RX-7 offering a convertible body style as well, but the effort to increase sales was futile.
When Mazda started constructing plans for the 1993 third generation of RX-7, they decided to return to the basics with the hard body coupe, and a turbocharged engine producing over 250 horsepower. But despite Mazda's best efforts, the weak dollar to yen exchange contributed to weak US sales, forcing Mazda to pull the plug after 1995 on the American market.
However, the RX-7 continued for Europe, Japan and several overseas markets well into the new century, with the addition of the RX-8 to the family boasting it's four door, four passenger body style.
According to sources, styling for the new RX-7, is said to be drawn from the 2006 Kabura concept, but based on the latest MX-5 roadster platform from Mazda. Details are still sketchy to the public at this time, but whatever Mazda may have under their sleeves, we look forward to the new addition of the Mazda rotary breed of cars.
